Each spring, the Wildlife Center prepares to release turtle patients that were “overwintered” at the Center. When a turtle patient is not healthy enough for release before October (when the temperatures drop and wild turtles are preparing for hibernation) the patient is kept in the Center’s climate-controlled Reptile Room through the winter into mid-spring (when wild turtles are awake following a winter hibernation). Turtles are slow healers, and they often need extended care in the hospital.
